A bit of history...

St. Peter Basilica in Vatican City stands as one of the most iconic and revered landmarks in the world. Its history traces back to the 4th century AD when Emperor Constantine constructed the original basilica over the burial site of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ.

The current Renaissance-style masterpiece designed between 1506 and 1626, primarily by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Its grandeur encompasses magnificent artworks, such as Michelangelo’s Pietà, the statue of Mary holding the body of Jesus, and Bernini’s Baldacchino, placed over where Peter is believed to be buried. Today, St. Peter Basilica remains a symbol of Christianity and a significant pilgrimage site for millions of Catholics worldwide, being the largest church and holding the tallest dome in the world.
